  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Butter
  • 4 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
  • 1 cup Hot Water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 3/4 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 Eggs

Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup Butter
  • 4 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder
  • 3 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 2 Tablespoons Buttermilk or Heavy Cream


  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add cocoa. Stir together.
  3. Add hot water. Bring to a boil for 30 seconds. Turn off heat.Pour into flour mixture and stir.
  4. Add vanilla, buttermilk, and eggs and fold into mixture. Pour into sheet cake pan (approximately 18 x 13). Bake at 375 degrees for 15-18 minutes.
  5. While cake is baking, make the chocolate frosting. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add cocoa. Stir to combine, then turn off heat. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, and buttermilk or heavy cream. Stir together. Pour over warm cake.
  6. Cut into squares.
