AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE HEALTHY JOURNEY:

Here is where I am going to get a little personal. I was a healthy and active girl when I got hit with an autoimmune disease that rocked my world. I visited the doctor and he performed an insane amount of blood tests to figure out what was going on with my body.

I was dealing with the debilitating effects of several autoimmune diseases — rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diseases, among others.

I didn’t think I would be dealing with arthritis in my 30’s! My weight had even skyrocketed for no apparent reason (which would put any woman in a tailspin).

After many blood tests confirmed I was dealing with several autoimmune issues, I was referred to both a rheumatologist and an endocrinologist to deal with the effects of my immune system going haywire.

What is an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune diseases are complex conditions in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, leading to a range of symptoms and health issues.

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders, mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs within the body.

In people with autoimmune diseases, the immune system fails to recognize certain parts of the body as “self” and, instead, mounts an immune response against its own cells and tissues. This can lead to inflammation, tissue damage, and various symptoms and health issues.

The specialists wanted to put me on a host of medications to help with the swelling and inflammation, all with a list of negative side effects. I felt as if I was ALWAYS at the doctor. I didn’t want to just put on a band-aid.

I went home and my husband and I just sobbed together on the couch (which he may not like me admitting publicly since he is not a crier), afraid of what the future might hold.

After a good cry, I felt determined to figure out what the ROOT cause of my health issues was. I started studying like crazy. I began driving around to every library in town, picking up stacks of health books, and researching everything I could about my disease. I became a full-on nerd!

I kept reading over and over about the powerful healing powers of whole foods. After much research, I decided to implement a 30-day healthy food plan.  It included only cold-pressed juices, whole food smoothies, vegetables, fresh fruit, fish, and chicken.  Nothing else.

Being the baker that I am, it just about killed me! Okay, truth be told….in reality, it gave me new life!  I supplemented my diet with a whole host of herbs that help with inflammation and autoimmune disorders.  I filled my refrigerator with the freshest ingredients and spent hours at a time creating smoothies and filling glass jars with them. I drank everything from raw fermented beet juice to cleanse my liver to lemon turmeric drinks to help calm my inflammation.

Here is a photo that was taken in Texas of a week’s worth of healthy whole foods that I ate to try to heal myself and relieve some of my symptoms. It’s amazing what happened after going 30 days eating this way!

6 Healthy Superfood Smoothies. The healing power of food.

After several weeks, my swelling drastically improved and I was able to move around with ease. The best part was going to visit the doctor for another round of blood tests and finding out that the most alarming results were reversed!

I still had a long way to go but this was a start. I still have to treat my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease with Synthroid but I have found some natural supplements to help me feel better. I am not a doctor so please don’t take my experience as medical advice but but will share some things that have helped me.

Here are some key benefits of incorporating a whole food diet into your lifestyle when dealing with autoimmune diseases:

1. Reduced Inflammation:

Whole foods are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, such as antioxidants and phytonutrients, which can help reduce inflammation in the body—a common issue in autoimmune conditions.

2. Improved Gut Health:

A healthy gut is essential for managing autoimmune diseases, as it is often linked to the immune system. Whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, provide fiber that supports gut health and aids in digestion.

3. Balanced Nutrient Intake:

Whole foods provide a wide range of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, which are vital for maintaining a strong immune system and managing the symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

4. Weight Management:

A whole food diet, centered around nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, can aid in weight management, which is crucial for individuals with autoimmune diseases, as excess weight can exacerbate symptoms.

Harnessing the Power of Whole Foods

Fruit smoothies are a delicious and convenient way to incorporate a variety of whole, nutrient-rich foods into your diet. Here’s how fruit smoothies can be particularly beneficial for those with autoimmune diseases:

1. Nutrient Density:

Fruit smoothies allow you to blend a variety of fruits and vegetables into one delicious drink, providing a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can support the immune system and overall health.

2. Easy Digestion:

Blending fruits and vegetables breaks down their fibers, making the nutrients easily digestible and absorbable for individuals with sensitive digestive systems, which is often the case with autoimmune diseases.

Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have specific dietary restrictions or concerns, consult a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice and guidance.

  1. I started making these for my kids snacks twice a day. They slurp them down and I love that they are getting all of there fruits and veg for the day. So whatever they eat with meals is a bonus vitamin intake. Thanks so much. They love the green goddess.

    1. Hi Malissa! I love to hear that. You just made my day! I am amazed when I do the nutritional information for these smoothies as to how much good vitamins and minerals are in them. I am so glad your family is loving them. Thank you!

    Hi Melissa!
I found your blog while looking up some great smoothies as my 13yo son & I are trying to eat more healthy as I am also trying to avoid going on medication for cholesterol. I also have several auto immune disorders and so your post was just what I needed. I do have a questions that someone asked, but I did not see a reply. How long do these last if made in advance (like in your picture) and did you drink one for b-fast & lunch and then have a regular meal for dinner consisting of healthy items?
Thank you for your blog as I loved learning about the herbs & vitamins that can help with some of my issues.
Look forward to reading more from your posts.

    1. Hi! That is such a great question! When I made these ahead of time, I would make enough for about 5 days. I would drink about 4-6 per day and then eat a big plate of veggies (sometimes with some fish). I would just put them in jars and then shake them well as they do separate. They kept in the refrigerator, no problem. I hope that helps!

  3. Hi Melissa, I came across this just looking for some nice summer smoothie recipes, and then I read your story. It resonated with me because I have been dealing with a lot of pain and inflammation, seen all kinds of doctors and gotten no answers. I’ve begun looking into changing my diet. Eliminating gluten first, then maybe sugar and dairy. But of course, I love all of these things! I’m curious to know if when you started the whole food diet as you call it, and started feeling a difference, you stopped eating sugar and gluten altogether? You seem to be such a baker and have so many delicious looking sweets on your blog… do you ever still indulge?

    1. Hi Serafina! This is a fabulous question. I love baked goods so it was very hard for me to give it all up for a period of time. I went through different stages — when I first eliminated most foods, I had headaches and didn’t feel that great. I wasn’t until I broke through that initial hard stage that I felt so much sharper and energetic. Now, I still eat gluten, dairy, and sugar (even though I feel much better when I don’t) but I mix in a lot of healthy foods to balance it all out. Wishing you all the best! — Melissa

  4. Hello! The wine glases are sooooooooooooo cute. Thanks for sharing.

I was wondering in your Pinterst picture with the mason jars….Did you make each juice separately and then combine them depending on the recipe?

    1. Hi Beverly! I actually made all kinds of smoothies and juices but drank them straight from the jar and didn’t combine them. It made it much easier as I could just shake the jar and drink it. I would make enough for about 5 days so I didn’t even have to think about it. I hope that helps! — Melissa

  5. Do you make any of these and store them in the fridge in a mason jar? How long do they stay good? Any of them that discolor or separate too much to store?

    1. Hi Lauren! I make them days in advance and put them in a mason jar and place them in the refrigerator. When I am ready to drink them, I give them a good shake and then stir them with a straw. The smoothies come back together and taste amazing. I hope that helps!

      1. Hi! Do you even include the bananas when you premake them? And Greek yogurt (I think I saw that in there…), or do you blend those sensitive ingredients in once you are preparing to drink them?

      2. Hello – sorry this is late to this comment. I read your article and I love to juice! I’m excited to juice more than 1 glass and leave in fridge. I want to be able to seal the mason jars though – how do you recommend sealing? I figure since it’s juice, you wouldn’t want to boil the jars. Thanks for telling a little about yourself and for being so kind by giving out recipes, tricks, and tips!

  6. Thank you for sharing your story. My 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and it has set me on a path similar to yours. I have Made a beets, kale, Swiss chard, chia, wheat grass and pineapple, and blueberry smoothie every morning. I am Going to try all of your recipes. Yesterday, we went to The doctor and to everyone’s surprise, her symptoms are gone Afro now!!! I believe In The whole food diet.

    1. Oh my heart hurts when I hear of little ones dealing with autoimmune issues. That is so tough! It sounds like you are making some incredibly healthy and delicious smoothies for her. I am so glad to hear that it is helping! There is power in healing foods. Take care! — Melissa

  7. I would love to hear more about how to get my fridge looking like yours did (picture of your weeks of eating). Did you make your smoothies ahead of time? How far in advance can you make them and how do you keep them from loosing nutrients (or do they)?
I have unexplainable health issues (headaches, fatigue, aches and pains) and my physical came out with me being perfectly healthy. I need my energy and strength back for the sake of our little kids. I feel whole foods diet might be the best thing to try to remedy some of this. But with three little ones I need to be very prepared or eating healthy goes out the window.
Thank you for the Tumeric drink recipe. I just prepared a jug this morning and look forward to adding it to my morning regime.

    1. Hi Colleen! I am so sorry you are dealing with health issues. It is tough! I do make my smoothies ahead of time when I am doing a strict smoothie and juice cleanse. It just makes it so much easier. I usually do 3-5 days worth of smoothies at a time but it all depends on how much room you have in your refrigerator. I usually give it a good shake and stir it with a straw and the smoothie comes back together. I find that keeping them in the refrigerator for up to 7 days works fine for me. I hope that helps! — Melissa

  8. I would love to know more specifics of what you did to help heal yourself. I too suffer from many chronic, debilitating diseases. But I’ve tried every anti-inflammatory diet out there and don’t see much improvement. I do have many many health conditions I deal with though. Maybe I’m a lost cause- haha! But I’m not giving up. Maybe I need to try different supplements. Anyway- would love to hear more. Should I email you? Thx so much. This post was inspiring and gave me hope.

  9. 5 stars
Are you still on a “healing” protocol diet or more just “healthy” protocol? Have you dealt with any anxiety along your path? How do you still implement all your yummy foods in your healthy diet? And lastly, what supplements do you feel like have made the biggest difference in your energy levels? I’m on my own healing journey for an auto immune disorder and it can be so overwhelming. Thanks in advance! Love, Kristina

    1. Hi Kristina! These are some great questions! I need to be on a healthier protocol as I feel SO much better when I do. It really does help alleviate so many of my symptoms. I find that anxiety can creep in so when it does, I reach for certain herbs. This is what works for me so ask your naturopathic doctor for what may be best for you. I like Rhodiola, ashwagandha, and vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, magnesium (malate, citrate, glycinate), and siberian ginseng. Those can be powerful, especially the ginseng for energy levels. I hope that helps! All my best on your road to healing. — Melissa

      1. So did you take all of your vitamins together? Because I was considering making some ginseng tea and take the vitamin D, Magnesuium, and the B12 together.
