6 Healthy Superfood Smoothie Recipes by Modern Honey. Healthy and delicious!

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE HEALTHY JOURNEY:

Here is where I am going to get a little personal. I was a healthy and active girl when I got hit with an autoimmune disease that rocked my world. I visited the doctor and he performed an insane amount of blood tests to figure out what was going on with my body.

I was dealing with the debilitating effects of several autoimmune diseases — rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diseases, among others.

I didn’t think I would be dealing with arthritis in my 30’s! My weight had even skyrocketed for no apparent reason (which will put any woman in a tailspin).

After many blood tests confirmed I was dealing with several autoimmune issues, I was referred to both a rheumatologist and endocrinologist to deal with the effects of my immune system going haywire.  The specialists wanted to put me on a host of medications to help with the swelling and inflammation, all with a list of negative side effects. I felt as if I was ALWAYS at the doctor. I didn’t want to just put on a band-aid.

I went home and my husband and I just sobbed together on the couch (which he may not like me admitting publicly since he is not a crier), afraid of what the future might hold. After a good cry, I felt determined to figure out what the ROOT cause of my health issues was. I started studying like crazy. I began driving around to every library in town, picking up stacks of health books, and researching everything I could about my disease. I became a full-on nerd!

I kept reading over and over about the powerful healing powers of whole foods. After much research, I decided to implement a 30-day healthy food plan.  It included only cold-pressed juices, whole food smoothies, vegetables, fresh fruit, fish, and chicken.  Nothing else.

Being the baker that I am, it just about killed me! Okay truth be told….in reality, it gave me new life!  I supplemented my diet with a whole host of herbs that help with inflammation and autoimmune disorders.  I filled my refrigerator with the freshest ingredients and spent hours at a time creating smoothies and filling glass jars with them. I drank everything from raw fermented beet juice to cleanse my liver to lemon turmeric drinks to help calm my inflammation.

Here is a photo that was taken in Texas of a week’s worth of healthy whole foods that I ate to try to heal myself and relieve some of my symptoms. It’s amazing at what happened after going 30 days eating this way!

6 Healthy Superfood Smoothies. The healing power of food.

After several weeks, my swelling drastically improved and I was able to move around with ease. The best part was going to visit the doctor for another round of blood tests and finding out that the most alarming results were reversed! I still had a long way to go but this was a start. I still have to treat my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease with Synthroid but I have found some natural supplements to help me feel better. I am not a doctor but will share some things that have helped me.

Here are some of the healing vitamins, herbs and supplements that have helped me with my autoimmune diseases:

For extra detoxification benefits, a lemon turmeric flush first thing in the morning will do the trick. This isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s super simple.

Lemon Turmeric Flush Drink:

  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 Lemon, squeezed
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Stevia or 1 Tablespoon Honey or Real Maple Syrup
  • Serves 2

Mix together, water, lemon juice, turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper (optional) and cinnamon. Add stevia, honey or maple syrup to taste. The cayenne pepper adds a kick to it so not everyone can handle it.

Lemon Turmeric Flush Drink. This is loaded with fresh lemon juice, turmeric, ginger, cayenne, and cinnamon. It will detoxify the body first thing in the morning and is an immune system booster.

If I am suffering from anything – from allergies to autoimmune issues to overeating the night before, this helps to clean out my liver and belly. I woke up this morning with swollen eyes caused by allergies and this drink helped the swelling go down quickly. You can drink it heated up or drink it cold straight out of the refrigerator. We make a large pitcher and keep in the refrigerator to last a week. We give it a good stir and guzzle it down.

Thanks so much, my friend! I use powder for the most part for ease. I do love the flavor of fresh ginger so I use that half of the time. I add more tumeric to my smoothies than I put in the recipes just because it helps me so much. Great question Robin! 🙂

I am so sorry that you are experiencing so much pain. It can be debilitating and frustrating. I dealt with popping knees for awhile and the crackling sound was so loud. I was able to turn it around. I am not a doctor but I can give you some advice that I hope can help you. I would suggest tumeric which helps with inflammation. You can buy it in the capsule form and swallow it with water. You can also add ground tumeric into your smoothies. Another thing you can try is called, Celadrin and it’s specifically for joints. You can buy it online or at Costco. High quality fish oils can be incredible for joints to help lubricate them. Also, food can be extremely healing so try to fill your diet with leafy greens (you can try my youthful green smoothie), vegetables, fruits, lean protein and try to stay away from gluten, dairy, fried foods, and sugar. Give it one month of taking those supplements and changing your diet and see how you feel. I wish you the very best and hope and pray that you get feeling better. Thank you for reaching out.

I too was suffering from unbearable skeletal pain from osteo-arthritis until I had it diagnosed correctly. It was determined that I was depleted of vitamin D3. Once I began the treatment the results were immediate and remarkable. The very next day I had no more pain. I thought, is this coincidence? I stopped taking Aleve, and Advil, which I was taking every day, which is destructive to the liver and kidney, so I was extremely happy to stop that.

I suggest you get your blood tested for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 test as soon as possible. Most vitamin D3 literate doctors or nurse practitioners usually recommend a three month mega dosage of 50,000iu/week, then retest you to see if your count is near normal. The normal count for D3 has changed over the past ten years. It started out at 50mol/L but has been increased to 80mol/L. I have been taking vitamin D3 since 2005. After getting my D3 stabilized, I started taking 2,000iu/day but soon began noticing the skeletal pain returning. I increased the dosage to 5,000iu/day and within two days the pain disappeared. After six months I got another test done and my levels of D3 were well within the normal range. As I’ve gotten older, I’m now in my seventies, I’ve had to continue increasing my dosage, something you’ll have to keep an eye on. I also recommend that you should do your own research on vitamin D3. Keep in mind, this is a vitamin that you can also get from sunbathing. The key to sunbathing is, DO NOT get sun burned! Good luck.

(I add a tsp of honey for add’l sweetness – doesn’t need it, but my sweet tooth likes it) First of all, I crave it morning and night, and I feel great knowing I can drink a salad twice a day. What is pure apple juice? Do I have to get it at a special store? Also do you use a fancy blender? I heard someone say that only the fancy blenders get the spinach fine enough that you don’t taste the bits of spinach. I want to try this green smoothy cuz I never eat spinach or kale, but know how good they are for you.

Hi friend! It sounds so fancy but it’s really just apple juice you pick up at the grocery store such as Tree Top or Mott’s. You absolutely can make this in a regular blender! You may need to blend it a little longer to make sure the spinach gets nice and smooth but it will still do the job. Start with using all spinach in the recipe, instead of 1/2 spinach and 1/2 kale and see what you think. Drink this down so you can eat a cookie after lunch is my motto. xoxo

Are you still on a “healing” protocol diet or more just “healthy” protocol? Have you dealt with any anxiety along your path? How do you still implement all your yummy foods in your healthy diet? And lastly, what supplements do you feel like have made the biggest difference in your energy levels? I’m on my own healing journey for an auto immune disorder and it can be so overwhelming. Thanks in advance! Love, Kristina

Hi Kristina! These are some great questions! I need to be on a healthier protocol as I feel SO much better when I do. It really does help alleviate so many of my symptoms. I find that anxiety can creep in so when it does, I reach for certain herbs. This is what works for me so ask your naturopathic doctor for what may be best for you. I like Rhodiola, ashwagandha, and vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, magnesium (malate, citrate, glycinate), and siberian ginseng. Those can be powerful, especially the ginseng for energy levels. I hope that helps! All my best on your road to healing. — Melissa

I would love to know more specifics of what you did to help heal yourself. I too suffer from many chronic, debilitating diseases. But I’ve tried every anti-inflammatory diet out there and don’t see much improvement. I do have many many health conditions I deal with though. Maybe I’m a lost cause- haha! But I’m not giving up. Maybe I need to try different supplements. Anyway- would love to hear more. Should I email you? Thx so much. This post was inspiring and gave me hope.

I would love to hear more about how to get my fridge looking like yours did (picture of your weeks of eating). Did you make your smoothies ahead of time? How far in advance can you make them and how do you keep them from loosing nutrients (or do they)?
I have unexplainable health issues (headaches, fatigue, aches and pains) and my physical came out with me being perfectly healthy. I need my energy and strength back for the sake of our little kids. I feel whole foods diet might be the best thing to try to remedy some of this. But with three little ones I need to be very prepared or eating healthy goes out the window.
Thank you for the Tumeric drink recipe. I just prepared a jug this morning and look forward to adding it to my morning regime.

It just makes it so much easier. I usually do 3-5 days worth of smoothies at a time but it all depends on how much room you have in your refrigerator. I usually give it a good shake and stir it with a straw and the smoothie comes back together. I find that keeping them in the refrigerator for up to 7 days works fine for me. I hope that helps! — Melissa

Do you make any of these and store them in the fridge in a mason jar? How long do they stay good? Any of them that discolor or separate too much to store?

Hi Lauren! I make them days in advance and put them in a mason jar and place them in the refrigerator. When I am ready to drink them, I give them a good shake and then stir them with a straw. The smoothies come back together and taste amazing. I hope that helps!

Hello – sorry this is late to this comment. I read your article and I love to juice! I’m excited to juice more than 1 glass and leave in fridge. I want to be able to seal the mason jars though – how do you recommend sealing? I figure since it’s juice, you wouldn’t want to boil the jars. Thanks for telling a little about yourself and for being so kind by giving out recipes, tricks, and tips!

I was wondering in your Pinterst picture with the mason jars….Did you make each juice separately and then combine them depending on the recipe?

Hi Beverly! I actually made all kinds of smoothies and juices but drank them straight from the jar and didn’t combine them. It made it much easier as I could just shake the jar and drink it. I would make enough for about 5 days so I didn’t even have to think about it. I hope that helps! — Melissa

Hi Melissa, I came across this just looking for some nice summer smoothie recipes, and then I read your story. It resonated with me because I have been dealing with a lot of pain and inflammation, seen all kinds of doctors and gotten no answers. I’ve begun looking into changing my diet. Eliminating gluten first, then maybe sugar and dairy. But of course, I love all of these things! I’m curious to know if when you started the whole food diet as you call it, and started feeling a difference, you stopped eating sugar and gluten altogether? You seem to be such a baker and have so many delicious looking sweets on your blog… do you ever still indulge?

Hi Serafina! This is a fabulous question. I love baked goods so it was very hard for me to give it all up for a period of time. I went through different stages — when I first eliminated most foods, I had headaches and didn’t feel that great. I wasn’t until I broke through that initial hard stage that I felt so much sharper and energetic. Now, I still eat gluten, dairy, and sugar (even though I feel much better when I don’t) but I mix in a lot of healthy foods to balance it all out. Wishing you all the best! — Melissa

    Hi Melissa!
I found your blog while looking up some great smoothies as my 13yo son & I are trying to eat more healthy as I am also trying to avoid going on medication for cholesterol. I also have several auto immune disorders and so your post was just what I needed. I do have a questions that someone asked, but I did not see a reply. How long do these last if made in advance (like in your picture) and did you drink one for b-fast & lunch and then have a regular meal for dinner consisting of healthy items?
Thank you for your blog as I loved learning about the herbs & vitamins that can help with some of my issues.
Look forward to reading more from your posts.

Hi! That is such a great question! When I made these ahead of time, I would make enough for about 5 days. I would drink about 4-6 per day and then eat a big plate of veggies (sometimes with some fish). I would just put them in jars and then shake them well as they do separate. They kept in the refrigerator, no problem. I hope that helps!

I’m so glad I found this site! Just a little back ground on me, I’m a 30 yr old woman, never had any health issues, always active. March 2017 my mom passed away at age 52 of a massive heart attack in her sleep. It wasn’t a good place for me. Fast forward to a year later, February 2018 I went to the dr for the first time since 2013, I had a over all Check and a ekg, my heart was good… my blood work, not so good. My thyroid levels were super high..TSH-<0.01,T4 Free- 3.78,T3-389.1
I was referred to the endocrinologist, end of April, she did more lab work, sent me for a ultrasound, put me on methinzole The ultrasound cane back with a nodule, 2 wks later went for a biopsy, it came back benign.
I don’t want to be on meds my whole life! I’m looking for great recipes in smoothies! Thanks!
Hyperthyroidism.. Graves’ disease.. it takes over my life, some days I feel like I have no energy, no drive. Some days I’d rather stay in bed.. thank you for your encouragement!

Hi Jennifer! I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. That is so tough as she was so young! That is heartbreaking. Research has shown that stress can wreak havoc on our bodies. When all of my autoimmune issues flared up, I was in a highly stressful time of life so I understand. I do believe in the power of healing alkaline foods that help our immune system. I hope that these smoothies help you and give you some energy. I understand how you feel and wish you all the best! — Melissa

Hi Alissa! If you peeked into my protein shake cabinet, you would see that I have tried so many as well! I am picky especially with plant-based ones. They tend to have a stronger flavor than whey so it is harder to disguise them. Whole Foods has one that is pretty good and it is their own brand so it is relatively cheaper and goes on sale a lot. I wish that I had one that I just LOVED but I am still searching. I will keep you posted when I find my absolute favorite!

My daughter does not like to eat much food in the morning. My concern was “small amounts of food means small amounts of nutrition.”. I decided fruit smoothies were the way to go. Fruit, milk and yogurt is our typical smoothie. These change it up a bit!

Hi Melissa what an inspiration you are. I to have become a nerd 🤓 over the years from researching all I can to overcome various autoimmune diseases like Lymes & M.E. Like you I have come so very far, I was housebound 6 years ago & now am back to work part time.

One important thing I have learnt is healing the wounds of my past & learning to validate my emotions as I had realised I surpressed my emotions for years & it manifested in my body & my body was shouting at me. People like Heidi Sawyer & Wendy De Rosa have helped me to understand my gift of sensitivity & how ignoring my feelings had manifested in my body. Finding the true me is one of the blessings of doing inner work not to mention healing my body. It takes a lot of energy to suppress emotions.

I felt called to share my story with you.

    Good morning Melissa,

I just came across your blog and I so love it and thank you for everything. Melissa I need your help with some remedies. First off my name is Mary and I am 52 years of age. Two weeks ago I was driving my car and all of a sudden I felt as if I couldn’t breathe. Since then I have been in 5 ER’s, had all kinds of blood work that all came back normal. I saw an endocrinologist because I have thyroid nodules and my doctor isn’t doing much of anything except saying take anxiety medicine. I feel as if I can’t breathe and I am very week. I feel like something is missing from my immune system. The endocrinologist says it will be 3 weeks before he gets my needle stick test back which was done 2 days ago (I never heard of test taking that long). Each time I went to ER and the Endocrinologist they say my thyroid levels were okay which I know couldn’t be true. Three weeks in now and I have no energy and still can’t sleep with breathing issues. I would love to make some of your smoothies because I truly believe something is going on with my immune system. I have been off work for 2 weeks and today I tried to go but I was too week and sick. All of these doctors and still no answer. I asked my doctor to check my vitamin D levels and my ferritin but none has been done. I just want to feel better and get back to myself. I don’t want to take all these meds which are only treating symptoms and not the issue. Thank you for time and have a wonderful day.

I had thyroid nodules too and my levels were always normal. Mine kept growing and I eventually had to have them removed surgically. Much easier to swallow now! I don’t think your tiredness and sickness is from that problem. I never felt sick or too weak to work. Hope the smoothies work for you.

I thank you for sharing your wisdom and guidance on the topic. I really would like to know do you add oatmeal to your smoothies? I find that this is the only way that I get full and satisfied from smoothies but it is a mucus producing food. I am getting over pneumonia and I’m really trying to detox and work on my diet like going vegetarian but I would really like to give smoothies and juicing a try. I definitely deal with inflammation so I will be trying the recommended tumeric and lemon drink. Thank you so much again and peace and blessings to you.

Hi MH …. Your dogged determination to get healthy is inspirational! Thank you so much for sharing your story and your recipes.

I have had Parkinson’s Disease going on 15 years now. I have come to the realization that I believe my poor diet, sleeping habits and stress was largely the root cause of PD.

My health depends om a slew of meds (4 meds, 5 times per day) …. So you know that can’t be too good for anyone. I now understand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. I never got sick before and thought I was invincible …. I sadly found out otherwise!

I am a single guy who doesn’t cook much but I know I need to eat better. So I thought about smoothies as being easy to make and taste good too.

When I saw your recipes contain a lot of the antioxidants and natural healing foods that my own research has uncovered …. ginger, turmeric, blueberries… I feel I’m on the right track…. especially if they have been “kid-tested”.

I can’t give your recipes a rating yet, because I have not made any, but as soon as I make some (next week) I’ll be sure to follow-up with that!

I have recently become a surrogate, after losing 250 lbs all naturally. This was the end goal, and I knew that pregnancy weight gain was going to be a mental struggle, however, I did not realize it would be this much of a struggle! Today I am entering my 13th week, and I’ve gained over 20 lb already. During the first trimester, it is normal to gain at 4 to 6 pounds. I’m way over budget already!

I was maintaining my weight for a year-and-a-half before entering this journey. Not only do I have my own hormones raging, but I also wad on hormone medication for the first couple of months. I guess I didn’t consider all of this!! But here I am, gaining weight, being blessed with the ability to bring a child into this world for another couple. Not only do I need to be healthy physically, but mentally as well! I have been considering going on a “diet’, but need something safe during pregnancy…

It was considering the doing a juice cleanse. I have never done it, and I know the commercial ones are crazy expensive, and I don’t want to buy a juicer. I know juice cleanses are great, I read all the reviews, but I do love the whole nutrients of whole fruits and vegetables. So while doing my research, I stumbled across your website regarding your juice cleanse. Which thankfully, had a hyperlink to this blog regarding your smoothies!

Here I go!!! Starting today, I am going to attempt the 30 day smoothie regimen for a physically and mentally healthier pregnant me! The goal: Lose the addition unnecessary weight that I have gained, lose the extra bloat & inflammation, gain my energy back, and destroy this mental struggle!

During my weight loss, and now, I have been very active at the gym. Honestly, I would have never lost the weight without my gym membership! I adore food, healthy and unhealthy, and wouldn’t have been able to do it on diet alone. I still eat like a fat kid, LOL, but I workout out like a maniac! When I became pregnant, I continued to eat like a fat kid, but no longer have the energy to workout like a maniac. This is the downfall: The balance is no longer here.

I am hopeful that this 30-day smoothie recharge will assist with this. Obviously I have additional nutritional needs while being pregnant, so I will be adding more protein in. I’m optimistic, and excited to start this! I did read that turmeric is unlikely safe for pregnancy in medicinal dosages, so I will be skipping that unfortunately, even though I was looking forward to trying it to see if it will help with the knee pain.

    Thanks for posting this!

I know this is a very old post, but just wanted to say if you are still struggling with any health issues at all, and have not already, try getting off the Synthroid. I suffered needlessly for 4 years on Synthroid before switching to natural dessicated thyroid. I also supplemented my main dose with the generic of Cytomel (T3 only drug). The improvements to my energy, focus, and weight loss-FINALLY!- were amazing. I’d suggest trying NP Thyroid from Acella. If an endocrinologist won’t prescribe it, many naturopathic or holistic doctors will. If NP doesn’t work for you, you could also try Armour. Best wishes for great health!

Thanks for this … I am going through a major flare=up right now and am looking for a way to combat it.

I want to throw out there that my autoimmune issues started up after I got silicone implants following a breast cancer diagnosis. There are many women experiencing autoimmune from silicone (from both augmentation and reconstruction). In the event anyone is suffering from this, it will continue to get worse unless you find an alternative to Silicone! There’s a group with over 100K women on Facebook and this has recently been covered in Oprah magazine. God bless!
