AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE HEALTHY JOURNEY:

Here is where I am going to get a little personal. I was a healthy and active girl when I got hit with an autoimmune disease that rocked my world. I visited the doctor and he performed an insane amount of blood tests to figure out what was going on with my body.

I was dealing with the debilitating effects of several autoimmune diseases — rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diseases, among others.

I didn’t think I would be dealing with arthritis in my 30’s! My weight had even skyrocketed for no apparent reason (which would put any woman in a tailspin).

After many blood tests confirmed I was dealing with several autoimmune issues, I was referred to both a rheumatologist and an endocrinologist to deal with the effects of my immune system going haywire.

What is an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune diseases are complex conditions in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, leading to a range of symptoms and health issues.

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders, mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs within the body.

In people with autoimmune diseases, the immune system fails to recognize certain parts of the body as “self” and, instead, mounts an immune response against its own cells and tissues. This can lead to inflammation, tissue damage, and various symptoms and health issues.

The specialists wanted to put me on a host of medications to help with the swelling and inflammation, all with a list of negative side effects. I felt as if I was ALWAYS at the doctor. I didn’t want to just put on a band-aid.

I went home and my husband and I just sobbed together on the couch (which he may not like me admitting publicly since he is not a crier), afraid of what the future might hold.

After a good cry, I felt determined to figure out what the ROOT cause of my health issues was. I started studying like crazy. I began driving around to every library in town, picking up stacks of health books, and researching everything I could about my disease. I became a full-on nerd!

I kept reading over and over about the powerful healing powers of whole foods. After much research, I decided to implement a 30-day healthy food plan.  It included only cold-pressed juices, whole food smoothies, vegetables, fresh fruit, fish, and chicken.  Nothing else.

Being the baker that I am, it just about killed me! Okay, truth be told….in reality, it gave me new life!  I supplemented my diet with a whole host of herbs that help with inflammation and autoimmune disorders.  I filled my refrigerator with the freshest ingredients and spent hours at a time creating smoothies and filling glass jars with them. I drank everything from raw fermented beet juice to cleanse my liver to lemon turmeric drinks to help calm my inflammation.

Here is a photo that was taken in Texas of a week’s worth of healthy whole foods that I ate to try to heal myself and relieve some of my symptoms. It’s amazing what happened after going 30 days eating this way!

6 Healthy Superfood Smoothies. The healing power of food.

After several weeks, my swelling drastically improved and I was able to move around with ease. The best part was going to visit the doctor for another round of blood tests and finding out that the most alarming results were reversed!

I still had a long way to go but this was a start. I still have to treat my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease with Synthroid but I have found some natural supplements to help me feel better. I am not a doctor so please don’t take my experience as medical advice but but will share some things that have helped me.

Here are some key benefits of incorporating a whole food diet into your lifestyle when dealing with autoimmune diseases:

1. Reduced Inflammation:

Whole foods are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, such as antioxidants and phytonutrients, which can help reduce inflammation in the body—a common issue in autoimmune conditions.

2. Improved Gut Health:

A healthy gut is essential for managing autoimmune diseases, as it is often linked to the immune system. Whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, provide fiber that supports gut health and aids in digestion.

3. Balanced Nutrient Intake:

Whole foods provide a wide range of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, which are vital for maintaining a strong immune system and managing the symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

4. Weight Management:

A whole food diet, centered around nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, can aid in weight management, which is crucial for individuals with autoimmune diseases, as excess weight can exacerbate symptoms.

Harnessing the Power of Whole Foods

Fruit smoothies are a delicious and convenient way to incorporate a variety of whole, nutrient-rich foods into your diet. Here’s how fruit smoothies can be particularly beneficial for those with autoimmune diseases:

1. Nutrient Density:

Fruit smoothies allow you to blend a variety of fruits and vegetables into one delicious drink, providing a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can support the immune system and overall health.

2. Easy Digestion:

Blending fruits and vegetables breaks down their fibers, making the nutrients easily digestible and absorbable for individuals with sensitive digestive systems, which is often the case with autoimmune diseases.

Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have specific dietary restrictions or concerns, consult a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice and guidance.

Thanks so much for sharing your recipes, I look forward to trying them and everything looks delicious! Me and my partner have to radically change the kind of food that we’re eating for health reasons, and at first we were bummed at having to give up some of our favorite foods, but looking at all your delicious ideas actually makes me look forward to the change and all the benefits that will come with it. Thank you!

  2. I saw it okay to eliminate the bananas from these recipes? I am not a big fan and they tend to overwhelm the taste for me

  3. I thank you for sharing your wisdom and guidance on the topic. I really would like to know do you add oatmeal to your smoothies? I find that this is the only way that I get full and satisfied from smoothies but it is a mucus producing food. I am getting over pneumonia and I’m really trying to detox and work on my diet like going vegetarian but I would really like to give smoothies and juicing a try. I definitely deal with inflammation so I will be trying the recommended tumeric and lemon drink. Thank you so much again and peace and blessings to you.

  4. Good morning Melissa,

I just came across your blog and I so love it and thank you for everything. Melissa I need your help with some remedies. First off my name is Mary and I am 52 years of age. Two weeks ago I was driving my car and all of a sudden I felt as if I couldn’t breathe. Since then I have been in 5 ER’s, had all kinds of blood work that all came back normal. I saw an endocrinologist because I have thyroid nodules and my doctor isn’t doing much of anything except saying take anxiety medicine. I feel as if I can’t breathe and I am very week. I feel like something is missing from my immune system. The endocrinologist says it will be 3 weeks before he gets my needle stick test back which was done 2 days ago (I never heard of test taking that long). Each time I went to ER and the Endocrinologist they say my thyroid levels were okay which I know couldn’t be true. Three weeks in now and I have no energy and still can’t sleep with breathing issues. I would love to make some of your smoothies because I truly believe something is going on with my immune system. I have been off work for 2 weeks and today I tried to go but I was too week and sick. All of these doctors and still no answer. I asked my doctor to check my vitamin D levels and my ferritin but none has been done. I just want to feel better and get back to myself. I don’t want to take all these meds which are only treating symptoms and not the issue. Thank you for time and have a wonderful day.

    1. I had thyroid nodules too and my levels were always normal. Mine kept growing and I eventually had to have them removed surgically. Much easier to swallow now! I don’t think your tiredness and sickness is from that problem. I never felt sick or too weak to work. Hope the smoothies work for you.

  5. Hi Melissa what an inspiration you are. I to have become a nerd ???? over the years from researching all I can to overcome various autoimmune diseases like Lymes & M.E. Like you I have come so very far, I was housebound 6 years ago & now am back to work part time.

One important thing I have learnt is healing the wounds of my past & learning to validate my emotions as I had realised I surpressed my emotions for years & it manifested in my body & my body was shouting at me. People like Heidi Sawyer & Wendy De Rosa have helped me to understand my gift of sensitivity & how ignoring my feelings had manifested in my body. Finding the true me is one of the blessings of doing inner work not to mention healing my body. It takes a lot of energy to suppress emotions.

I felt called to share my story with you.

    1. Hi Sara my name is Mary and I am having some issues right now and I believe it may have to do with some stress of my past and present. Could you please contact me so I can find out what you did because I am having all kinds of illnesses and been in and out the hospital only to be told they can’t find anything wrong with me. All they want to do is put me on anxiety medicine. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day.

My daughter does not like to eat much food in the morning. My concern was “small amounts of food means small amounts of nutrition.”. I decided fruit smoothies were the way to go. Fruit, milk and yogurt is our typical smoothie. These change it up a bit!

    1. That’s such a great idea! This is the way to sneak in nutrition into my children’s diet. If they start the day with a smoothie, then I know they are on their way to getting their vitamins and minerals for the day. Glad this is helpful for you. Have a great day! — Melissa

    1. Hi Alissa! If you peeked into my protein shake cabinet, you would see that I have tried so many as well! I am picky especially with plant-based ones. They tend to have a stronger flavor than whey so it is harder to disguise them. Whole Foods has one that is pretty good and it is their own brand so it is relatively cheaper and goes on sale a lot. I wish that I had one that I just LOVED but I am still searching. I will keep you posted when I find my absolute favorite!

  7. I’m so glad I found this site! Just a little back ground on me, I’m a 30 yr old woman, never had any health issues, always active. March 2017 my mom passed away at age 52 of a massive heart attack in her sleep. It wasn’t a good place for me. Fast forward to a year later, February 2018 I went to the dr for the first time since 2013, I had a over all Check and a ekg, my heart was good… my blood work, not so good. My thyroid levels were super high..TSH-<0.01,T4 Free- 3.78,T3-389.1
I was referred to the endocrinologist, end of April, she did more lab work, sent me for a ultrasound, put me on methinzole The ultrasound cane back with a nodule, 2 wks later went for a biopsy, it came back benign.
I don’t want to be on meds my whole life! I’m looking for great recipes in smoothies! Thanks!
Hyperthyroidism.. Graves’ disease.. it takes over my life, some days I feel like I have no energy, no drive. Some days I’d rather stay in bed.. thank you for your encouragement!

    1. Hi Jennifer! I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. That is so tough as she was so young! That is heartbreaking. Research has shown that stress can wreak havoc on our bodies. When all of my autoimmune issues flared up, I was in a highly stressful time of life so I understand. I do believe in the power of healing alkaline foods that help our immune system. I hope that these smoothies help you and give you some energy. I understand how you feel and wish you all the best! — Melissa
